The support plate is now mated with the cam bearing installer (Photo 16)
and the bearings are pressed in. The timing marks on the cams are matched
up, (Photo 17) the secondary chain installed, going in the right direction, and
the cams are pressed into the plate. (Photo 18).
This is a snap thanks to JIMS new installer, featured here. The "cup," as it's
called, (it's the bridge-like press die) has one side slightly longer so that one
cam can be started into its bearing and then the press ram moved to the
center of the bridge to complete the operation. At this time the slave cam snap
ring and the cam bearing retainer are re-installed. Before the support plate is
re-installed the o-rings that seal the oil feed port (Photo 19) and the oil pump
(Photo 20) should be replaced. A light film of engine oil should be applied to
the o-rings before installation. This is also a perfect time to replace the inner
INA cam bearings with "full compliment" needle bearings.

The support plate and cam assembly is now fitted back into place. Replace the
six Allen blots that secure the support plate and tighten them to 90-120 inch
pounds. The torque sequence for this operation starts with the lower rear then
goes to the middle front, the upper rear, the lower front, the middle rear and the
upper front. Insert the oil pump bolts and turn them in until they just contact the
plate face. Them, while turning the engine, so that the pump can find its natural center, snug them down. Tighten them down, in the order stamped in the plate,
to 90-120 inch pounds. The secondary chain tensioner retaining pin can now
be carefully removed, allowing the tensioner to rest against the secondary
chain. Squeeze the tabs of the forward cam chain follower and re-install at this
time. Replace the primary cam spacer (Photo 21) if you are using the stock
gear, or, if, as in our case, you're using an Andrews cam set where the gear
and spacer are one leave it off. If you're installing an aftermarket cam set it is
necessary at this time to check the alignment of the primary and crank
sprockets. This is done by laying a straight edge across the face of both
sprockets, then checking to make sure that there is no more that a .005 of an
inch difference. If there is, it will be necessary to shim the cam sprocket. Once
this is accomplished the sprockets and chain can be installed, taking care that
the chain is going in the right direction. Using the sprocket locking tool
tighten the cam and crank bolts to 24 foot pounds. Remove the locking tool,
relieve the tension on the tensioner retaining pin, remove it and lower the
tensioner until it rests on the chain. The cam cover is now replaced, using a
new gasket, the cover bolts we set aside are installed now and torqued down
to 90-120 inch pounds. The sequence numbering starts with number one at the
rear of the rear lifter boss and go counter clockwise starting first with 1, 9, 5, 3,
2, 8, 10, 4, 6, and 7.

Pushrod adjustment for the Hydrosolids is somewhat different than other
tappets. The pushrods are lengthened to a point of "no-lash," that is, until the
rods can be turned with a light drag. The rods are them lengthened one turn to
compress the tappet seat. After waiting several minutes, about 3, the oil has
been forced from the tappet body, and we're ready to proceed. The pushrod is
shortened, and then lengthened to a point of "no-lash." It is then slowly
lengthened until the rod has enough drag so that it can barely be spun using
two fingers and the thumb. The jam nut is tightened, (Photo 25) and you're
done. The other push rod is adjusted the same way, the pushrod tubes are
seated and secured, and you're on to the rear cylinder. The rear cylinder
adjustment is identical to the front.

Clean up, fire up, check for leaks, and we sent Paul down the road for the only
true test of this kind of install, the seat test. If the seat pushes you harder that it
did, the operation is a success.
